Yes, you read that right. My word I finally received for 2020 from God is Fear. Really God? Of all the words you could let guide my year and starting a new decade, and it's Fear?? This is where God's sense of humor with me gets real. He never does anything the way I think it should be or go. This is why the verse in the Bible from Isaiah 55:9 NIV is so true, not just for me but also for you. "As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts."
The word fear has always been a bad word for me. Just saying or hearing it has made me tremble in fear in the past and run away or pull temper tantrums with God. And let me tell you, I have had plenty of fears in my life and most of mine have happened in the past decade we just left. I feel like God is now nudging me to overcome some fears in this new decade and conquer them with His help.
I have prayed for the past several years for words from God to guide my year and let that word be my intention and focus. He has given me words in the past like intentional, discipleship, disciplined, and focused. But never anything like Fear. As I was praying about this, these are the scriptures that kept coming up to confirm to me this was His word for me. And in each verse, the word Fear jumped off the page.
(I added this photo of a snake because nothing makes me more fearful than a snake)!
"Teach me your way, LORD, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name" Psalm 86:11 NIV
"You shall follow The Lord your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him" Deuteronomy 13:4 NIV
"You shall fear The Lord your God; you shall serve Him and cling to Him, and you shall swear by His name" Deuteronomy 10:20 NIV
Now, this is what God showed me after He gave me the word fear. He said to replace that word fear with the word honor. So every place in the verses above go back and re-read them and when you see 'fear" replace it with honor and how does it read to you now? For me, it was a lot less intimidating and more tangible to accomplish. God also showed me that sometimes our perspective on words and situations can be a little less daunting if we would look at them just a little differently. Whew! What an insight.
I encourage you to spend a little time with God today through His word and just be still with Him and I bet He will teach you some things too! Hey, He may even give you a word to guide your year if you ask Him! Be careful, because it may be a word you would have never chosen for yourself. I know God will guide and teach you because He wants you to grow and accomplish what He has for you too.
