"Get To, Not Got To...."

I had the privilege of attending a “Strengths Finder” presentation with our company this past week. This was 4 hours of our time that was very well spent.  Just to give you a little insight, the Strengths Finder questions calculate 5 of your strongest themes that have no right or wrong answers.

My number one strength was responsibility then belief, developer, relater, and woo.  I found all 5 of my strengths definitely fit me professionally and personally.

After sitting through this presentation, I asked our facilitator how to find authentic, daily joy in roles that I like and am drawn to?  Sometimes I get so caught up in what I have to do on my plate that my job responsibilities become things I am just checking off.  I take my job very seriously and I often lose joy in doing the roles I have been called to.  I have a fear of letting people down and not staying committed to what I say I will do.

The facilitator said, are you ready for this?  If you enjoy what you do then you should always look at your job as a “GET TO” not a “GOT TO” situation.  The light bulb got really bright for me.  You see, I have been given the opportunity to now work in our personal business and there are many perks that come with this but there is great responsibility too.  I can now work around my hours, spend more time with my family, and influence many day-to-day decisions within the workplace environment that impacts our staff positively.   I also get to incorporate my God-given talents and my learned skill-sets from my former career in nursing in my current position.

The bible says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving”

Colossians 3:23-25 NIV

I don’t say this to boast but God has blessed me more than I will ever deserve in this life.  I live in a beautiful home with a man and a family I love dearly, I have well-mannered and healthy kids, we have a thriving business that keeps growing each year with wonderful employees we call our other family.   There is nothing I want for with all of my needs met and the blessings continue to flow each day.

The strengths finder class revealed to me that I needed a shift in my thinking with how I approach my job responsibilities and life in general.  I now see and pray for what God has entrusted to me as “GET TO” blessings instead of “GOT TO” tasks.  I get to do what I do each day because God has entrusted me to do what He has before me.   I gladly accept His challenges and work for Him and not for man.

Sometimes, just changing our thought process can make all the difference in how we view our jobs, marriages, health, children....fill in the blank.
